Facts about Infertility:

Most experts define infertility as not being able to get pregnant after at least one year of trying. Women who are able to get pregnant but then have repeat miscarriages are also said to be infertile.

Lots of couples have infertility problems. About a third of the time, infertility can be traced to the woman. In another third of cases, it is because of the man. The rest of the time, it is because of both partners or no cause is found.

Pregnancy is the result of a complex chain of events. In order to get pregnant:

  • A woman must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation).
  • The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).
  • A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.
  • The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).
  • Infertility can result from problems that interfere with any of these steps.

    Types of Infertility:

    Hypofertile
couples have trouble conceiving quickly. Their fertility may be less than ideal or they may be having problems with timing, but they can eventually conceive without special treatment. For example, the man might have a low sperm count, or the woman might have endometriosis—roadblocks, but not brick walls.

Sterile couples won't be able to conceive without medical or surgical treatment. For example, the man might not create enough sperm to fertilize an egg, or the woman might have blocked fallopian tubes.

What are the causes of Infertility?

Most infertility results from physical problems in a man or woman's reproductive system.

  • About 35 percent of all cases of infertility arise from problems in the man's system.
  • About 35 percent arise from abnormalities in the woman's system.
  • About 20 percent of the time, the man and woman both have fertility problems.
  • In 10 percent of cases, no cause can be found.
  • Age often increases the risk of infertility.
  • Infertility can be caused by poor sexual or lifestyle habits that are easily remedied. For example, the couple may be using a sexual lubricant that interferes with the survival of the man's sperm. Or, they may not be having sex often enough. Other easily treated illnesses or lifestyle habits that may contribute to infertility are:

  • Heavy use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
  • Starvation diets or anorexia in the woman.
  • Tight underwear or pants in the man, which raises the crotch temperature and reduces sperm count.
  • Stress. In a woman, this may cause her periods to be irregular. In a man, stress may reduce his sperm count.

What are the symptoms of Infertility?

Infertility does not cause physical symptoms. Infertility is a general term for a couple's inability to get pregnant after 1 year of having sex 2 to 3 times a week without using birth control methods.

For women younger than age 30 with unexplained fertility problems, some doctors will diagnose infertility and offer treatment to a couple only after 3 years of their trying to become pregnant. For women over 35, some doctors will offer testing and treatment after 6 months of trying to become pregnant.

In some cases, an infertile woman may have abnormal menstrual periods. An infertile man may have some signs of hormonal problems such as changes in hair growth or sexual function.

What treatments are available for Infertility?

Infertility can be treated with medicine, surgery, artificial insemination or assisted reproductive technology. Many times these treatments are combined. About two-thirds of couples who are treated for infertility are able to have a baby. In most cases infertility is treated with drugs or surgery.

Doctors often treat infertility in men in the following ways:

  • Sexual problems: If the man is impotent or has problems with premature ejaculation, doctors can help him address these issues. Behavioral therapy and/or medicines can be used in these cases.
  • Too few sperm: If the man produces too few sperm, sometimes surgery can correct this problem. In other cases, doctors can surgically remove sperm from the male reproductive tract. Antibiotics can also be used to clear up infections affecting sperm count.
  • Various fertility medicines are often used to treat women with ovulation problems. It is important to talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of these medicines. You should understand the risks, benefits, and side effects.

Doctors also use surgery to treat some causes of infertility. Problems with a woman's ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus can sometimes be corrected with surgery.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is another type of treatment for infertility. IUI is known by most people as artificial insemination. In this procedure, the woman is injected with specially prepared sperm. Sometimes the woman is also treated with medicines that stimulate ovulation before IUI.

IUI is often used to treat:

  • mild male factor infertility
  • women who have problems with their cervical mucus
  • couples with unexplained infertility

    HerbaCall Infertility Testimonials:

    • Barbara Falke says, "4 years ago I was diagnosed with infertility. I then went through a hormone therapy and became pregnant following an in vitro fertilization. The pregnancy was okay, however, I suffered from diabetes, slept through almost seven months of my term, retained water, so that my feet grew by 3 sizes and delivered my beautiful baby girl (who is now 2 1/2) by caesarian section...18 months after my daughter was born I started the Herbalife weight loss program, lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks and got an incredible energy boost. I continued the program because I felt so good and then got pregnant again (without any medical support this time)!"

    • Shelley Nicol tells HerbaCall, "Before Herbalife I was 25lbs. overweight, suffered from daily chronic headaches, frequent migraines, depression and irregular menstrual cycles which all added up to using fertility drugs to get pregnant with our first two children and suffering through two miserable pregnancies...Within two weeks of being on the Herbalife Ultimate Program I lost 10lbs and went on to 20lbs in 6 weeks, which was great. The really awesome part is that within a week my daily chronic headaches were a thing of the past, I haven't had a single migraine in the 11 months I've been on the products, my depression lifted more in the first 4 weeks on the products than it had in the previous 4 months and after 10 weeks on the products we got pregnant with our third child naturally. After a healthy pregnancy we gave birth on July 17th 2002 to a healthy baby boy." At my annual physical, the RN took my high blood pressure and it was 122/72. That was pretty good reading for most people. After 3 weeks on the Niteworks, I went back to the doctor's office and my high blood pressure dropped to 106/66! What an amazing result with the Niteworks!"
