Facts about Snoring:
Snoring is common. Almost half of adults snore at least
occasionally. It occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in your
throat, causing the tissues to vibrate as you breathe, creating
hoarse or harsh sounds. It occurs more frequently in men and people
who are overweight. Snoring has a tendency to worsen with age.
Forty-five percent of adults snore occasionally, while 25% are
considered habitual snorers.
Occasional snoring is usually not very serious and is mostly a
nuisance for the bed partner of the person who snores. However, the
habitual snorer not only disrupts the sleep patterns of those close
to him, he also disturbs his own. Habitual snorers snore whenever
they sleep and are often tired after a night of what seems like
quality rest. Medical assistance is usually needed for habitual
snorers to get a good night's sleep.

What are the causes of Snoring?
People who snore often have too much throat and nasal tissue, or
“floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate. The position of the
tongue can also get in the way of smooth breathing. Evaluating how
and when you snore will help you pinpoint whether the cause of your
snoring is within your control or not.
Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is
physically obstructed. The walls of the throat vibrate during
breathing, resulting in the distinctive sounds of snoring. Air flow
can be obstructed by a combination of factors, including:
Obstructed nasal airways: Partially blocked nasal passages
require extra effort to transfer air through them while sleeping.
This can pull together or collapse the non-rigid soft and dangling
tissue of the throat, resulting in snoring. Some people snore only
during allergy seasons or when they have a sinus infection.
Deformities of the nose such as a deviated septum (a structural
change in the wall that separates one nostril from the other) or
nasal polyps can also cause obstruction and sleep problems.
Poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue: Throat and
tongue muscles can be too relaxed, which allows them to collapse and
fall back into the airway. This can result from deep sleep, alcohol,
and some sleeping pills. Normal aging causes further relaxation of
these muscles and increases the potential for snoring.
Bulky throat tissue: Being overweight can cause bulky
throat tissue. Also, children with large tonsils and adenoids often
snore.
Long soft palate and/or uvula: A long soft palate or a
long uvula (the dangling tissue in back of the mouth) can narrow the
opening from the nose to the throat. When these structures vibrate
and bump against one another during sleep, the airway becomes
obstructed causing snoring.

What are the symptoms of Snoring?
Obstructive sleep apnea is an extreme form of snoring in which
your upper airway closes while you are asleep, causing an
obstruction that prevents you from breathing for a brief period.
If you have sleep apnea, you begin snoring, then stop breathing
for at least 10 seconds (apnea). The apnea temporarily quiets the
snoring, after which you awaken with a large snort. This pattern
occurs in 95% of people with sleep apnea.
Each cycle of blockage (apnea) and awakening can last from 20
seconds to 3 minutes, repeating many times throughout the night.
Five episodes per hour per night are common. More than 15 episodes
per hour per night are the criteria used to diagnosis the condition
referred to as sleep apnea. Some snorers can have anywhere from
100-600 episodes or cycles of sleeping and waking per night.
Although people with sleep apnea may be completely unaware of
this repeating sleep-snore-apnea-wake pattern, it is very disruptive
to normal sleep patterns. Usually, it is the bed partner who is most
aware of the condition. Relationships, along with school and job
performance, often suffer because of persistent daytime fatigue that
develops as a result of continuously disrupted sleep.
Characteristics of obstructive sleep apnea:
Movement in the bed when you wake and change
position to breathe more easily
Excessive daytime sleepiness with napping
that often does not fully rest you
Mood changes such as anxiety and irritability
Decreased sexual drive and depression
The repeated cycles of snoring, apnea, and waking that
characterize OSA can lead to adverse physical changes and
complications such as these:
High blood pressure
Coronary artery disease, heart attacks,
strokes
Pulmonary hypertension
Confusion
Loss of memory

What treatments are available for Snoring?
F or mild forms of snoring caused
by swelling of the lining of your nose, a doctor may prescribe an
inhaled steroid to take before going to sleep. He or she may also
suggest dental appliances or nasal strips. For more severe forms of
snoring due to sleep apnea, surgical procedures or continuous
positive airway pressure may be prescribed.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a treatment
in which a mask is worn over the nose and/or mouth while you sleep.
The mask is hooked up to a machine that delivers a continuous flow
of air into the nostrils. The pressure from air flowing into the
nostrils helps keep the airways open so that breathing is not
impaired.
Surgery may be needed to correct a physical problem that
is causing you to snore. Surgical options include:
Somnoplasty: A minimally invasive
procedure to reduce the soft tissue in the upper airway
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy:
Removing the tonsils and/or adenoids may be needed to prevent
snoring.
Palate surgery: Your doctor may
recommend removing certain tissues of the soft palate that may
be obstructing your breathing.
The Pillar procedure, or palatal implantation, is a
new surgery which has shown promising results for snoring. Small
plastic implants, less than an inch-long in size, are inserted into
the soft palate using a syringe-like instrument. The procedure is
usually performed in a doctor’s office under local anesthesia, with
little pain and mild side effects. Scar tissue builds up around the
implants, causing the tissue of the soft palate to stiffen which
ceases the vibrations that cause snoring. The down-side of this
procedure, and any surgical cure, for that matter, is that it is
relatively new and it is expensive. Most insurance plans does not
cover surgery for snoring.

HerbaCall Snoring Testimonials:
·
Gary Carden
says, "
Prior to joining the Herbalife family, my wife suffered sleep
deprivation due to my snoring and sleep apnea. She was constantly
awakened by either my not breathing or by the walls being rattled.
Neither she nor I were getting quality sleep...I was first
introduced to Mentabalance and NRG. After several days I did start
to feel better. My wife also stated that my apnea and snoring were
apparently lessened since she was able to sleep through the night.
Shortly afterward we went on a weekend trip but I forgot to take the
tablets. I am now reminded daily, by my spousal unit, to "take my
pills", which I do mid morning and 2-3 hours prior to bed. My wife
says I no longer snore, I "purr".

Gary Vozka tells HerbaCall, "
Our oldest
daughter Amanda, (now 13) snored VERY LOUD. She had (noticed I
said had) a problem snoring since she was about 6 years old. She
also suffered from chronic sinus infections. Trip to the doctor
about once every month for medication was not uncommoon. She
also suffered from allergies & asthma. She took Rhinocort,
Clariton, & Flonase to which nothing helped. She also suffered
from Bladder Infections which was caused from the medication she
was taking for her allergies and asthma...About 2 years ago,
after we became Independent Distibutors, we got her started on
the
Schizandra, &
RoseOx for her allergies. After about 3 weeks we
noticed a change in her asthma. Her allergies also were starting
to disappear. About 6 months ago we noticed that her snoring was
NOT as loud. On top of that she is totally off of the Inhalers
and Clariton tablets for allergies. She also LOVES the Cookies
and Cream Formula 1. My wife and I also LOVE IT!"
